The Dandenongs are barely an hour from the city and feel like another country. Mountain ash, tree ferns, cool air and a permanent smell of damp forest. It is one of the loveliest places in Victoria to get married, and one of the more demanding places to drive a wedding car properly. Both of those things are worth taking seriously.

An hour east, and a thousand feet up

The climb starts at the foot of the hills and does not really stop. From Melbourne you come out along the Burwood Highway or the Mountain Highway, and within minutes of leaving the flat the road narrows, tightens and starts switching back on itself. Sassafras, Olinda, Kalorama and Mount Dandenong sit strung along the ridge; Belgrave, Sherbrooke and Emerald sit below on the southern side, where Puffing Billy still runs.

The Mount Dandenong Tourist Road links most of it together. It is beautiful and it is slow, and it is not a road to be optimistic about timing on.

The gardens are the venue

What people come up here for is green. Cloudehill at Olinda has terraced gardens and a restaurant in the middle of them. The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, also at Olinda, is famous for its rhododendrons. Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens at Sherbrooke gives you a lake, a boathouse and a fern gully. SkyHigh at the summit of Mount Dandenong trades forest for a view back over the whole basin, and Sassafras keeps the village end of it with its tea rooms and boutique venues.

None of these read like a city wedding. The backdrop is texture and light rather than architecture, which changes what the car needs to do. Colour matters more, chrome matters less, and the car spends a lot of its day parked on grass or gravel.

Narrow roads, real planning

This is the part that gets underestimated:

• The tourist road has few places a car can safely stop, and fewer where it can turn
• Many venue driveways are steep, damp and shaded, and stay slippery long after rain
• Fog rolls in with very little warning, particularly late afternoon in the cooler months
• Weekend traffic through Olinda and Sassafras backs up around the cafes
• Phone coverage drops out in the gullies, so plans need to be agreed in advance

Mist, timing and the light

Photographers love these hills for the same reason drivers respect them. Filtered light through mountain ash, mist sitting in the gullies, and the kind of soft overcast that flatters everybody. It also means the good photographic window can close suddenly. Building the drive between ceremony and reception into the schedule, rather than treating it as dead time, tends to be the difference between a relaxed afternoon and a rushed one.
