Shoots on the foreshore
More photographers ask us about St Kilda than anywhere else in Melbourne, and it is easy to see why. You have the palms along Jacka Boulevard, the bay behind them, Luna Park and the Palais for the retro shot, the Sea Baths, Catani Gardens, and a rebuilt St Kilda Pier with a viewing deck out over the water. The light in the last hour before sunset does most of the work for you.
A few practical notes. The foreshore roads and car parks are where the angles are, and we work from them rather than driving onto sand or garden beds. Commercial shoots on public land usually need a permit from the council, and that is the production's job, not ours. Mornings are far easier than afternoons for anything that needs a clean background. Acland Street, Fitzroy Street and the long nights
The two strips still define the social side of St Kilda. Acland Street for the cake shops, restaurants and the slow wander, Fitzroy Street for the bars and the later end of the evening.
Both strips are also where St Kilda's parking gets genuinely difficult. Clearways, permit zones, a tram line down Fitzroy Street and a foreshore that fills from mid-morning on any warm day. Neither is a suburb you want to be parking a low, expensive car in at one in the morning. Luna Park, the Palais and the Esplanade
The Esplanade is the suburb's front row. Luna Park and the Palais Theatre sit side by side facing the water, the Espy anchors the northern end, and the Esplanade market takes over the footpath every Sunday.

Along the bay
St Kilda's real advantage is the road either side of it. North through Albert Park along Beaconsfield Parade, or south down Beach Road towards Brighton and the rest of Bayside. Flat, open and right on the water the whole way.

From the roads and car parks along the foreshore, yes, and that is where most of the usable angles are anyway. Commercial shoots on public land generally need a council permit, and that sits with the production rather than with us.
Where do you hand the car over in St Kilda?
Wherever you are, though we will often suggest a quieter street behind the Esplanade rather than the foreshore itself, particularly on a Sunday when the market is running and parking disappears.
Is a convertible worth it here?
